A bióloga marinha Liz Welicha estava à frente das pesquisas do governo sobre uma possível solução para um problema na região oceânica infectada por uma super bactéria.
O oxigênio está abaixo do nível ideal devido ao rápido desenvolvimento da superbactéria, se tornando uma grave ameaça para a população. Liz estava em busca de um antibiótico quando foi, injustificavelmente, demitida. Ela agora se dedica ao seu principal hobby e atual fonte de renda, o mergulho em apneia.
Enquanto Liz pratica apneia como forma de terapia, um inédito fenômeno acontece: O oxigênio desaparece. Pessoas, em várias partes do país, se desesperam por não conseguirem respirar. Em apenas um minuto sem oxigênio milhares de mortes são confirmadas.
Atônita, a comunidade científica tenta responder aos questionamentos de toda sociedade.
Liz é procurada pelo homem que assumiu seu cargo à frente das pesquisas.
Ele confidencia a ela que suas pesquisas estavam certas e que o estranho fenômeno, chamado Apneia, acontecerá novamente, porém com maior duração. Liz volta a olhar suas pesquisas e arquivos em busca de uma resposta.
A Apneia retorna, agora com duração de dois minutos, matando dezenas de milhares de pessoas. Por causa disso os valores dos alimentos, aulas de apneia e cilindros de oxigênio ficam exorbitantes, cabendo só a pessoas de poder aquisitivo elevado, nomeadas cidadãos de mérito, direito de usufruir desses (agora) artigos de luxo.
A bactéria que está limitando a quantidade de oxigênio disponível no ambiente, se prolifera ferozmente para grandes propriedades que sustentam o agronegócio. Diante do superfaturamento e escassez aa pessoas começam a saquear as reservas de alimentos e oxigênio para se manterem vivos. Começa assim, uma guerra civil por sobrevivência.
O governo decreta novas leis que beneficiam os cidadãos de mérito, promovendo privilégios no acesso a oxigênio e mão de obra. Dessa forma, um novo regime escravocrata é instaurado, no qual a população carente, trabalhará em troca de alimento e oxigênio para esse seleto grupo. 
Caberá a Liz desvendar o que está acontecendo e como reverter o quadro da falta de ar que poderá inviabilizar a vida na terra.

Marine biologist Liz Welicha was at the forefront of a government research into a possible solution to a problem in the oceanic region infected by a super bacteria.
Oxygen is below the ideal level due to the rapid development of the super bacteria, becoming a serious threat to the population. Liz was on the hunt for an antibiotic when she was, unjustifiably, fired. She is now dedicated to her main hobby and current source of income, freediving.
While Liz practices apnea as a form of therapy, an unprecedented phenomenon occurs: The oxygen disappears. People in various parts of the country are desperate for not being able to breathe. In just one minute without oxygen thousands of deaths are confirmed.
Astonished, the scientific community tries to answer the questions of the whole society.
Liz is contacted by the man who replaced her as the lab's head of research.
He confides in her that her research was right and that the strange phenomenon, called Apnea, will happen again, but with a longer duration. Thus, Liz goes back through her research and files to look for an answer.
The Apnea returns, now lasting two minutes, killing tens of thousands of people. Because of this, the price of food, oxygen cylinders and, even, her apnea classes, are exorbitant, leaving only people with high purchasing power, named citizens of merit, the right to enjoy these (now) luxury items.
The bacteria that is limiting the amount of oxygen available in the environment, proliferates ferociously for large properties that support the agribusiness. Faced with overpricing and shortages, people begin to plunder food and oxygen reserves to stay alive. Thus begins, a civil war for survival.
The government enacts new laws that benefit the citizens of merit, promoting privileges in access to oxygen and labor. In this way, a new slave regime is established, in which the needy population will work in exchange for food and oxygen for this one select group.
It will now be up to Liz to find out what is happening and how to reverse these shortages of oxygen that could make life on earth unfeasible.
