From the icy lands of Argentine Patagonia, following through the triple Brazilian border region and taking us all the way to the dense forests of northern Brazil, where the law does not always prevail and where dirty money makes the rules. The story is full of suspense and mysteries that will lead to the construction of each character unraveling their most intimate secrets. Using references  of series such as: "Bloodline", "The Bridge", "Ozark" and "True Detectives", help us to glimpse over "The Nortons" dynamics, settings and plots.

“Os Nortons” é um seriado de ação, aventura e mistério. Sua trama se desenrola em diversos países latino-americanos, seu ritmo é de constante movimento, como um “Road Movie” em série e o seu tema principal é o tráfico de pessoas e a busca por desaparecidos no Brasil e America Latina. A nossa história começa nos dias atuais e, em paralelo, acompanhamos a busca e investigação do desaparecimento de duas jovens mulheres que possuem em comum o fato de terem desaparecido em território argentino em dias bem próximos. Um desaparecimento tem como núcleo principal uma família brasileira, os Nortons, que vivem numa diminuta cidade da serra do estado do Rio de Janeiro, chamada Gardênia,onde possuem uma oficina mecânica. A população desta pequena cidade é formada por agricultores e produtores de flores. A história dos Nortons começa a partir do desaparecimento de Muriel, uma jovem de 25 anos. O irmão mais velho de Muriel, Edgar, e sua irmã mais jovem, Nina, com a ajuda de um tio, o policial aposentado Miguel, empreendem uma investigação particular na procura pela irmã desaparecida. Esta busca começa nas montanhas e lagos de Bariloche, Argentina, e se estende pelas favelas do Rio de Janeiro, por "resorts" e praias do nordeste brasileiro, pela imensidão da floresta amazônica e desemboca na fronteira sem lei de Brasil, Paraguai e Argentina. Enquanto os Nortons procuram a irmã desaparecida por recantos diversos, enfrentando situações perigosas e dramáticas, uma outra investigação acontece na região da tríplice fronteira, nesta mesma região de Paraguai , Brasil e Argentina. Aguirre Cortaza, um jornalista argentino, desempregado, faz um “favor remunerado” para um amigo rico: descobrir o paradeiro da filha de 20 anos, Letícia, que “sumiu” no mundo. A última imagem que se tem de Letícia é uma foto de rede social, onde ela aparece sorridente e com uma mochila às costas, às margens das Cataratas do Iguaçu. A partir desta busca, Aguirre conhecerá e enfrentará uma miríade de obstáculos dentro do arriscado e temerário universo do contrabando de armas, drogas, cigarros e produtos diversos que domina a fronteira dos três
países.
 

A história destes dois desaparecimentos, as suas respectivas buscas e investigações levam os personagens a mergulhar numa America Latina profunda, de lindíssimas paisagens e ao mesmo tempo recheada de perigos. Nesta narrativa de busca, no ritmo de “gato e rato”, onde a violência é ingrediente dominante, muitas vezes os Nortons e também Aguirre Cortaza se envolverão em inquietantes situações com a tensão de não saberem se estão dentro ou fora da lei.
 

Ao final da primeira temporada, as duas histórias se encontram para abrir as cortinas de uma trama singular e repleta de novos caminhos, personagens e significados. O que têm em comum Letícia e Muriel? Quem procura por elas? Por que desapareceram? Elas serão finalmente encontradas? Estas perguntas serão respondidas em parte ao final da primeira temporada de “Os Nortons” e encaminharão a segunda temporada da série onde o passado, tanto da família de Muriel como de Letícia, vem à tona com toda a força, revelando segredos ocultos e instigantes, que mostram outras facetas de nossos principais personagens.

 

Falar em uma “America Latina profunda” é reportar-se à existência de certas regiões onde ainda vale a lei do mais forte em todas as suas variantes: física, econômica e intelectual. E é nestas regiões que proliferam os casos de desaparecidos. O desaparecido civil é aquela pessoa que saiu para realizar qualquer atividade cotidiana e jamais retornou. Sem motivo aparente, sumiu sem deixar vestígios. Por tal, colocam-se três problemas imediatos: a) saber o que ocorreu; b) saber o que fazer; c) saber a quem procurar. Se houvesse uma resposta para o que ocorreu, tudo seria mais simples. Para se chegar a esta resposta, é necessário investigar. Então se recorre à instituição policial, com o argumento de que o desaparecido pode ter tido violado seus direitos fundamentais. O que parece óbvio, não o é. Estudos mostram que recorrer à policia tem constituído forte obstáculo enfrentado pelas famílias de desaparecidos. Sem o suporte institucional do Estado, a família ou os conhecidos vêem-se num duplo desafio: na procura pelo desaparecido, devem trabalhar as expectativas de vida do mesmo e também o luto. A procura às vezes se torna um processo angustiante sem fim. Por tal, o desaparecimento de uma pessoa é um evento que provoca transformações profundas na família da mesma.
 

Dados estatísticos mais conservadores apontam 48 mil ocorrências anuais envolvendo desaparecidos no Brasil. Dentre estes, deve-se lembrar que 10 a 15% dos casos ou nunca são solucionados ou têm como conseqüência a morte do desaparecido. Na America Latina, o fenômeno se repete. As causas dos desaparecimentos são diversas: a) conflitos familiares; b) violência urbana; c) doenças; d) seqüestro para tráfico de pessoas; e) ausência de informações d) seqüestro para uso em magia negra. Dentre estas causas as que interessam e serão abordadas pela nossa série, “Os Nortons”, está o tráfico de pessoas para motivos diversos: trabalho escravo, prostituição, tráfico de órgãos, magia negra, etc...
 

Durante o desenrolar de nossas tramas principais, das buscas por Muriel e Leticia, um caso real virá à tona e ganhará importância na segunda temporada da série. Nos anos 80, no sul do Brasil, milhares de crianças foram adotadas ilegalmente. Todo o processo de adoção, envolvendo casais estrangeiros da Europa, Israel, Estados Unidos e Canadá, que desconheciam a ilegalidade da operação, teve a participação tanto de policiais como de funcionários de cartórios e alfândegas do Brasil e das fronteiras mais ao sul do continente. Um dos personagens principais da historia, Miguel Norton, o tio de Edgar e Nina, estará envolvido com esta operação e esta sua participação provocará profundas mudanças na vida de seus familiares.

"The Nortons" is an action, adventure and mystery series. The plot unfolds in several Latin American countries. Its rhythm is of constant movement, like a road movie within a series format. Its main theme is human trafficking and the search for missing people in Brazil and in Latin America. Our story begins in present day and we follow the investigation of the disappearance of two young women who have disappeared in Argentina and only a few days apart from each other. A disappearance occurs with a typical Brazilian family, “The Nortons”, who live in a small town in the state of Rio de Janeiro called Gardenia, where they run a car repair shop. The population of this small town is made up of farmers and florists. The story of “The Nortons” begins after the disappearance of Muriel, a 25 year old young woman. Muriel's older brother, Edgar and his younger sister, Nina, with the help of their uncle, a retired police officer called Miguel, undertake a private investigation for their missing sister. This begin searching the mountains and lakes of Bariloche, Argentina, through the city of Rio de Janeiro, the resorts and beaches of north eastern Brazil, through the immense Amazon rainforest and the lawless triple border that divides Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.

While the Nortons look for their missing sister in various places, they face dangerous and dramatic situations. Another investigation takes place in the region of the triple border. Aguirre Cortaza, an unemployed Argentinean journalist, is paid to do a favour for a rich friend: he must discover the whereabouts of the tycoon’s 20-year-old daughter Leticia, who had disappeared while travelling the world. The last picture of Leticia is located in the social network. She carries a backpack and smiles near the Iguaçu Falls. This search will lead Aguirre to a myriad of obstacles within the risky and reckless universe of arms, drugs and cigarette smugglers, as well as every other product that goes through the busy border.
 

The story of these two missing girls, their respective searches and investigations lead the characters to immerse themselves in the deep end of Latin America, filled with beautiful landscapes and horrendous dangers. This narrative has the frantic rhythm of a chase, where violence is a major ingredient. The Nortons and Aguirre will often find themselves in disturbing situations with the strain of not knowing whether they are acting within or outside the law.
 

At the end of the first season, the two stories meet only to open the curtains of a singular plot filled with new pathways, characters and meanings. What do Leticia and Muriel have in common? Who is looking for them? Why did they disappear? Will
they ever be found? These questions will be answered in part at the end of the first season of "The Nortons" and will point the way for the second season of the series where both the past of Muriel and Leticia's families will be revealed. The strength of
their backstory will present the audience with many other facets of our main characters.
 

To speak of the "deep end of Latin America" is also to refer to the existence of certain regions where the law of the strongest is still valid in all its variants: physical,economic and intellectual. And it is in these regions that the disappearances abound. The missing civilian is that person who went out to perform any daily activity and never returned. For no apparent reason, he or she has disappeared without a trace. Therefore, there are three immediate problems: a) knowing what happened; b) knowing what to do; c) knowing who to look for. If there was an answer to what had happened, everything would be simpler. To arrive to this answer, we must investigate. Then the police are called forth, with the argument that the missing person may have violated their fundamental rights. What seems obvious is not. Studies show that resorting to police has been a major obstacle faced by families of the missing person. Without the support of the State, the family or the acquaintances find themselves in a double challenge: in the search for the missing person, they must understand the expectations of the finding the person dead or alive. The search can sometimes become an endless and harrowing process. Because of this, the disappearance of a person is an event that greatly changes a family.

More conservative statistics show 48 thousand annual disappearances in Brazil. Among these, note that 10 to 15% of the cases are never solved or a lifeless body is found. The same statistic can be applied to Latin America. The causes of the disappearances are many: a) family conflicts; b) urban violence; c) diseases; d) human trafficking; e) lack of information. Among those causes that are of interest and will be the focus of our series is the human trafficking for slave labour, prostitution and organ traffic.
 

During the unfolding of the quests for Muriel and Leticia, a real event will gain importance in the second season of the series. In the 1980s, in southern Brazil, thousands of children were illegally adopted. The entire process of adoption involves foreign couples from Europe, Israel, the United States and Canada, who are unaware of the illegality of the operation. This event had the participation of the Brazilian police and officials of notaries and customs at the southern borders of the continent. One ofthe main characters Miguel Norton, the uncle of Edgar and Nina, will be involved in this operation and the scandal will cause major changes in the lives of their relatives.
Among the Nortons, nothing is what it seems to be.
